Kickstarter is an online crowdfunding platform for people to bring their ideas to life and out into the market.

Entrepreneurs create campaigns of their ideas with the goal of receiving enough investment to launch their business. People who financially contribute or invest in these campaigns are known as ‘backers’. They contribute financially in exchange for ‘rewards’, which are normally in the form of products advertised in the campaigns, usually at a discounted rate for investing at this early stage. In our case, we offer up to 50% off exclusively to our Kickstarter backers, and they get to wear our shirts first before they are released into the market (Yay!).

Each campaign has its own funding goal, and the amount of investment from backers will only get charged once the funding goal has reached 100% within the time limit set by the creator. In our case, our funding goal is HK$ 10k (US$ 1275) in 30 days.

Think of it as a way of pre-ordering an early release of a product ahead of the market, without paying the full retail price.

As much as we would prefer to have the currency to be set in whichever country our backers are in, we have no control over this, and currently, Kickstarter does not support this feature.

First off, I am really sorry if you (and others) have experienced such a terrible experience. It is a shame that these kinds of campaigns, unfortunately, do exist in this platform and as a result, leave a bad repercussion for other genuine projects out there. My advice to all this is always to make sure to review the campaign carefully and fully before backing. There are a bunch of useful articles online that you can read up on, to make sure you know what to look out for in these dodgy campaigns. For example, if you cannot see any profiles and photos of the team behind the campaign, then this is usually a red alert.

Having said all that, I can assure you that we are nothing like these campaigns. In fact, this really goes against the very core ethics of our brand, and most importantly, as human beings. This is a very complex and important question that one of our backers asked, so we would like to share this with you all:

To start, we need to understand a few things about allergies and the symptoms one gets when triggered:

There are so many different types of allergies and a wide range of symptoms that each one creates and often overlays with each other, that it is often very difficult to pinpoint the cause and root of the problem. Also, different people experience different levels of allergies. For example, getting a stuffy nose might be caused by pollen, pollution, food, clothing etc… Or it could be the combination of them all. Another example would be more specific to skin type reactions such as rashes or itchy skin when you wear clothing from a specific type of fabric, which is more commonly known as skin-chaffing.

The main causes of skin-chaffing:

-Cheaply made, non-certified fabrics, where they are often treated with the cheapest, and often the most toxic of finishes. This is harmful to the skin (and our planet), to say the least. -Non-breathable fabrics with no anti-microbial properties. A non-breathable fabric creates an ideal environment for bacteria and fungus to grow inside the fabric. -Poor seam constructions, with cheap quality stitching thread. Rubbing these against the skin will irritate the skin, causing rashes and irritations.

Our Air-Knit fabric is:

-Bluesign® Approved, meaning it has reached today’s highest ecological standard in fabric making, including the dying process. Cleaner fabric = Happier skin (and planet!). -Has a unique mesh construction, engineered with the sole purpose of keeping you cool by maximizing ventilation zones and air permeability. Allowing your body to breathe as much as possible will help decrease perspiration levels, and with Polygiene®’s ‘Stay Fresh’ technology- an eco-friendly, permanent anti-odor control, The Regenerative Tee is anti-microbial, killing 99.9% odor-causing bacteria and fungus. -Our Merrow® stitch is 30% softer than the usual flatlock seams you find in athletic clothing. We use Coats® threads- the world’s leading premium thread manufacturer. All our seams are placed with care in areas the least in contact with the skin.

While being 100% transparent and honest, we cannot and will not guarantee that our shirts won’t ever trigger allergies, because of the complexity of the issue. More importantly, we never make promises that we cannot back up on 100%. One thing we can promise is that we are extremely critical in all areas of product development, including the best ways to lower the risk of skin-related allergies by choosing a cleaner made, certified fabric, with certain features specifically targeting allergy-causing elements.

A great question worth exploring and understanding between the two very different fibers (Regenerated Polyester (our tees) Vs Merino) with different distinct benefits that set them apart.

First off, here are the main benefits of our Tees over Merino ones:

-It is much cheaper (a merino tee will cost around US $80, ours cost US $29 (super early bird)).

-It dries quicker. Our yarn is naturally hydrophobic, meaning it doesn’t really like water that much. Merino will retain moisture longer inside the fabric.

-It is more durable. Regenerated Polyester is a synthetic fiber and is much stronger than Merino yarn, which is notoriously fragile, since it is a natrual fiber.

-It is lighter. It is impossible (for now) to make a merino tee as lightweight as ours. To give you some perspective- our tees are almost 2x as light as most 100% merino tees out there.

-It is more breathable due to the fact that we can knit our fibers in a unique mesh construction with maximum air permeability. We would not be able to do this with merino yarn, it will just fall apart.

-Not all people can wear Merino due to that itchy feeling you get from the fibers sticking out.

-It is a Vegan / animal free product. Unless the wool is certified non-mulesed, some merino products may contain wool that was collected through the process of mulesing- something that we are strongly against, and recommend everyone to be aware and conscious of this issue when buying a wool product.

-Also I would like to point out that our Regenerated Polyester yarn comes from water bottles, instead of Petroleum (oil), which is a precious non-renewable resource. Once it’s used up, that’s it. We save a tonne of water, energy, and CO2 by using Regenerated Polyester over Virgin Polyester. Two exactly the same fiber with the same performance properties, ours are just a lot less taxing on the planet.

Now, here are the main benefits of Merino tees:

-It is softer to the touch, and generally considered more ‘comfortable’ if you don’t have problems with wool fibers.

-It has ordor control, without the use of a fabric finish.

-It controls temperature better. The famous term ‘Keeps you warm when you are cold, and keeps you cool when you are hot.’

-It is a natural fiber and will bio-degrade IF the product is made from 100% Merino wool.

-Both fibers wick moisture well, but merino wool tends to abosorb quicker as it is a hydrophlic fiber (likes water).

To sum up, we do love Merino wool as a fiber and we are actually already developing some products for next year (if you want to know more, email [email protected]), but for The Regenerative Tee- the focus was to create the lightest, most breathable and hi-wicking shirt made with the sole purpose of keeping you cool, dry and comfortable in the Summer heat. It also has to be affordable, therefore we chose Regenerated Polyester as a more superior yarn for this specific product.

We plan to start delivery around the end of May/beginning of June. We are able to provide such a quick delivery service because our fabrics are already produced and sent to our garment factory in Vietnam. It will take between 7-14 days tracked to most cities in the US, so we plan to have them delivered to your front door around mid-June. We will keep you closely updated on this.
